Bucks Keep Rollin’ in for Burns Trust

Clipsal’s partnership with the Julian Burton Burns Trust is continuing strongly, with around $100,000 raised through the donation of funds from the sale of smoke alarms and over $50,000 raised by Club Clipsal members.

The Burns Trust is raising money to assist with burns prevention programs, patient care services and research equipment.

Kathy Bicknell is a Clinical Nurse Consultant at the Burns Unit of The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, where the Julian Burton Burns Trust has recently helped in the renovation and refurbishment of the playroom and family facilities.

"Thanks to the Julian Burton Burns Trust, these areas are now more pleasant and user friendly for the children and families to access," Kathy said.

Additional funds will be used to improve the outpatient department at the hospital.

"The money will be used by the staff in the outpatient department to purchase equipment used to distract burns patients when they have their dressings changed. We are looking at equipment such as an iPad, Playstation and a Ditto virtual reality distraction device."

The most common burn injury seen at The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne is scald burns in the one to two-year age group.

"These injuries occur mainly when a child reaches up and pulls a cup of hot tea or coffee off a kitchen bench, or they pull a pot of hot fluid off a stove," Kathy said.

Kathy believes that many burn injuries could be avoided and that there is definitely a need for burns prevention awareness.
