Clipsal Lifesaver® Safety Switch

It could save someone you love from being electrocuted. Give your family the best protection money can buy.

Here in Australia we have one of the world’s safest electrical systems, yet electricity still brings with it the danger of electrocution. Today, every new home built in Australia is required to have a safety switch (as required by AS/NZS 3000:2000 (wiring rules))

You can also have the same peace of mind that safety switches bring to people moving into new homes. With the simple installation of a Clipsal Lifesaver® Safety Switch in your home’s electrical switchboard, your family will have the best protection money can buy.

Long recognised as the leaders in the field of electrical accessories, Clipsal manufactures a wide range of safety switches. Many are built in Australia and all of them are designed for Australia’s tough conditions.

Clipsal Lifesaver® Safety Switches meet and exceed Australian standards and are made using only the best and safest materials.

How to avoid the tragedy of electrocution

A faulty power tool. A frayed iron cord. A youngster trying to get the toast out of the toaster with a knife! All of these situations can be potentially fatal.

A Clipsal Lifesaver® Safety Switch offers the best protection against electrical shock if a faulty appliance or unprotected live wire is touched causing electrical current to flow through the body to earth.

When an appliance is in use, current flows along the ‘Active’ wire, through the appliance, and back along the ‘Neutral’ wire. In a normal, safe operation, the current in the ‘Active’ wire is the same as the current in the ‘Neutral’ wire.

A Clipsal Lifesaver® Safety Switch continually monitors the power flowing through the ‘Active’ and ‘Neutral’ wires. If a difference in current flow occurs, the safety switch instantly cuts off the power. Electricity running through the body to earth causes a difference in current flow and is by far the most common cause of electrocution.

Protection for your entire home

Clipsal offers the following three types of safety switches: Switchboard Mounted, Power Point and Portable.

By far the most efficient form of protection against electrocution is a Clipsal Lifesaver® Switchboard Mounted Safety Switch because it offers the best overall protection for your entire home. All power and lighting circuits in your home can be protected if required.

These safety switches are available in a wide range of current ratings and sensitivities to provide the level of protection that’s necessary for your safety. Having a Clipsal Lifesaver® Switchboard Mounted Safety Switch installed also puts all your home’s electrical controls in the one place - by your meters and circuit breakers or fuses.

Single circuit protection

While they are not designed to protect your entire installations, Clipsal’s Lifesaver® Power Outlets with an inbuilt safety switch can protect a single circuit in specific parts of an installation, such as the kitchen, nursery, garage, bedroom, bathroom or laundry.

Portable Protection

For a tradesperson or the home handyperson who works away from a fixed safety switch, portable protection is a must. The cords of power tools and electrical garden equipment are easily damaged and using any appliance in damp conditions can be dangerous.

The Clipsal Lifesaver® range of portable protection includes Plugs, Plug Adaptors, Heavy Duty Cord Sets and Cable Reels, each one offering safety when you work with electricity.

The smallest amount of electrical current can kill

It takes only a tiny amount of electrical current to seriously or fatally injure a normal, healthy adult.

The severity of an electric shock is usually determined by the amount of current flowing through the body and the length of time the current flows before it is cut off.

A Clipsal Lifesaver® Safety Switch cuts off the power supply when the current to ‘Earth' exceeds 30 thousandths of an ampere, a minuscule amount when you consider many appliances such as power tools and portable heaters can use up to 10 ampere.

When a difference in current flow occurs, a Clipsal Lifesaver® Safety Switch will cut the power within 40 thousandths of a second, about a fortieth of the time taken for a single heartbeat, or the click of your fingers.

Installation

By law, Clipsal Lifesaver® Safety Switches must be installed by an electrical contractor - a licensed professional who can give you the best advice about installing a Clipsal Safety Switch.
