Our plug for safety
Recently the electrical standards of Australia and New Zealand were updated to reflect a safety requirement. As of 3rd April 2005 all products sold to end users are required to have insulated pins. Clipsal endorsed this safety measure by changing the way they manufacture their electrical plugs, anticipating the move by integrating the insulated pins into their product lines since 1998.
What are insulated pins?
Clipsal has created a means of applying a layer of insulation directly to the electrical pins without adding to the overall width. Providing a layer of protection between you and an active circuit.
Why do we need insulation?
Research has shown that with the insulated protection applied to the pins the safety of a workplace or home can be greatly enhanced. Previously an electrocution could occur from contact with a live electrical pin exposed from an incorrectly or partially inserted electrical plug; the shock occurring when the pins come into contact with a thin conductive material like that of a metal knife or Venetian blind.
Having the insulation covering the majority of the active and neutral pins will allow for an added layer of safety. Answering the recent change to the Australian standard requesting that all active and neutral pins on low voltage plugs shall be of the insulated pin type by 3rd April 2005.
What to look for?
Clipsal has created two packaging symbols so that you can easily recognise a product with the new safety insulated pins. A circular version of the Safety plug symbol will appear on most packaging whereas a rectangular version will appear on header cards and wholesale point of sale material and other promotional pieces. Keep an eye out for the introduction of the new symbols on all Clipsal packaging (see examples below).
